The Virginia Association for Veterinary Technicians (VALVT) hosted their annual conference this past weekend at Blue Ridge Community College in Weyer’s Cave, VA.
Showing Vet Techs TTellington TTouches
I had a blast teaching 4 classes on Calming Reactive Animals Naturally with Essential Oils & Tellington TTouch in Vet Clinics. We were able to work with a cat, a number of dogs, horses and people through out the day.
What a fabulous, warm and caring group of people! I thoroughly enjoyed meeting so many dedicated students and Techs.
Sweety, a female cat was a beautiful ‘teaching assistant’ helping everyone learn about using TTouch and essential oils with kitties. I lightly misted the area around her carrier before she came out with a Peace & Calming, Rescue Remedy, Aloe Vera Juice and water spritzer and we all watched her settle just from the aroma. Holding a towel over the entrance way allowed her to come out of the carrier and briefly hide while she adjusted to a dozen people watching her. After I

explained who they were and what we were doing, she peeked out. The towel draped around her as a “Superman Cape” was a helpful tool allowing her to be held easily while keeping her paws on the table but away from my hands. Using TTouches through the towel is also much less threatening than directly on the body. The cape is so helpful for holding fussy, biting, clawing cats. Bring one with you to the Vet’s to help out your cat, Vet and the Techs. Sweety especially liked it when I used a feather to stroke and apply TTouches on her face, head and body. She preferred the feather to the softness of a paintbrush along her face. She began purring when I used Hair Slides.
We continued with 7 dogs from a local shelter. In groups of 2-3 people to a

dog, I began to walk the group through using TTouch and essential oils with the dogs. Initially it was pretty chaotic in the room as each dog was excited and uncertain to meet so many new people doing these weird circles on them. Everyone soon settled as people became more comfortable trying out the circular TTouches, Ear Strokes, Noah’s March long firm strokes, mouth work and essential oils. Dakota, a young male dog helped everyone learn how The Balance Leash can help a dog go from pulling to calm and responsive.
In the afternoon, two elder horses joined us. Starlet, a 20+ yr. Standardbred mare was an eager recipient for the equine demonstration. It was as if she had been waiting all day for her ‘spa’ treatment! She seemed to thoroughly delight in each and everything I demonstrated. She got ‘well oiled’ with the grounding and balancing

application moving from high headed, stiff and uncertain to mega relaxed, head down, back and topline lengthening, standing squarly and then moving with more connection through her entire body. Her stablemate joined us as people began stroking with our 4’ stiff ‘magic TTeam wands.’ People even got to experience what it was like to have their backs and legs stroked. They commented on how calming and grounding it was for them.
Thanks to all wonderful VALVT organizers, the Vet Tech helpers, all those who came to the classes and to Kerry Leavitt for all the fantastic pictures, videos and help through the day!

Enjoy the nourishing effects of therapeutic grade lavender.
Lavender is the most versatile essential oil and is often used to cleanse and soothe burns, cuts, and other skin irritations. In addition, its relaxing scent has balancing properties that help calm the mind and body. I use YL Lavender for all kinds of things. If I am in doubt what to use, I go for my Lavender! Whether it is for my dogs, cat, horses, myself, family or clients, I use it all the time. Cuts, scrapes, wounds, itchies, insect bites, burns or for soothing, calming, relaxing during the day or to help at night before bed, I love my Lavender! My parents travel with their Lavender ALL THE TIME!
Lavender Foaming Hand Soap cleanses and conditions your hands without leaving dryness or irritation. Infused with lavender essential oil, vitamin E, and aloe, this soap is effective yet gentle enough for the most sensitive skin. <note from Sandy> If you have not yet tried this foaming soap, I very highly recommend it! It smells heavenly, I use it in office bathroom and my clients love it too! Great antibacterial with a soft scent. I have been known to use this in a pinch for cleaning toilets, floors and various other household situations when my Thieves Cleaner is at the other end of the house! Works great.
LavaDerm Cooling Mist contains lavender essential oil and aloe to soothe and rejuvenate stressed skin. It provides comforting relief for minor burns, abrasions, dryness, and other skin irritations. Bring relief to stressed skin with a blend of gentle skin-soothing ingredients including lavender essential oil and aloe vera. Spray directly onto the affected area and repeat every 10-15 minutes until desired relief is achieved. This has been used for people as well as horses and dogs quite a bit for all kinds of itching situations and is very effective. I heard a Holistic Vet mention she uses LavaDerm Cooling mist in her practice too!
Lavender Lip Balm soothes dry lips, harnessing the power of lavender essential oil and the moisturizing benefits of jojoba and vitamin E. I use the the Lip Balm all the time and love it of course. It is smooth, silky, smells great, provides a healing balm that can soothe sunburn and chapped lips well. I got my brother hooked on this and he swears by it!

Have you had a recent loss, change in job, relocated, worry about money, a change in marital status, chronic pain or illness, abuse physically, emotionally or sexually? Had a brain injury, experienced emotional trauma or been taking care of someone else who is ill?
If you answered yes to any one of these, then your system knows stress, possibly chronic or extreme stress. And likely, you are dealing with some of its physiological counterparts.
Did you know there is a relationship between chronic diseases like Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Colitis, Blood sugar issues, Anxiety, Depression and our Endocrine System, Hormones, Adrenals and Stress?
Stress related issues and illnesses comprise 99% of the issues people complain of when they come into Dr. Mary Bove’s Naturpoathic office in Brattleboro, VT seeking help.
Dr. Bove, ND has found stress to be the basis of a lot of chronic illnesses for people. She is seeing this relationship unfold more and more frequently. And, she is finding new connections and understandings all the time. She treats a lot of children, as well as men, women, and teenagers.
Do you have some difficult to diagnose or puzzling pieces with your health?
Dr. Bove looks at the symptoms, but also helps people understand the links between what we do in our lives, our health, how we developed these issues and, what we can do to help our system come back into true balance. She looks beyond the symptoms.
What leads us to immune hypersensitivity?
How does our gut become leaky and permeable?
Why do you get outbreaks of yeast infections?
What leads you into allergic reactions?
How does stress increase a loss of bone mass?
What does fluid retention have to say about your life?
Why does fat accumulate more easily now as you grow into your 30’s, 40’s 50’s?
What happens in your body when subject to mild or ongoing stresses of life?
Find out the answers to these questions and what we can do to support our bodies in the upcoming Teleseminar with Dr. Mary Bove, ND, a leading Naturopath and Herbalist as she shares her wisdom and medical knowledge with us.

How do I know Dr. Bove?
Many of you have heard me talk about Mary over the years. As a student at the Barbara Brennan School of Healing in the early 1990′s, and living in Vermont, I was the receptionist and then office manager at the Brattleboro Naturopathic Clinic.
I’d listen as clients made appointments for difficult, painful, chronic illnesses and watch them over the weeks steadily improve with Mary’s attentive care. People would come in miserable and after working with Mary for awhile they’d start shining.
Mary would tell me about looking at the whole picture and the importance of education about food, nutrition, diet and lifestyle. She’d share how most of the deeply challenging conditions that walked through the Clinic’s door could have been avoided. She’d often outline steps that could have been taken for prevention as well as how she’d treat many complex conditions.
Often Mary would go hiking over the weekend and come back with a half dozen wild herbs. By the time I came in at 9am on Monday morning, she’d have them all soaking so they could be later made into tinctures to use for clients. I’d ask questions about their properties and uses which she’d rattle off easily. There was also a full herbal pharmacy that rivals any store. Always eager to teach, Mary was gracious with information about all the herbs and herbal combinations. What gifts she always offered!
My two+ years working with her had a profound impact for me personally and professionally with my development in the healing arts.
It is with great honor and excitement that I’m offering this class via telephone conference for everyone! I hope you will join us Tuesday, August 30, 2011, while Dr. Mary Bove, ND shares her wisdom, medical knowledge and deep compassion on ways we can naturally support our bodies and endocrine systems so we can live life more fully.
Typically Mary only lectures at Herbal and Naturpoathic conferences. We are very fortunate for her to offer this class for us!

Anniversaries from the loss of a loved one, whether pet or human, can stir up all kinds of memories, both sad and sweet. Pet loss can be as a deep process as it is for loosing a human. Living strong is not what we think of after we loose a friend and family member.
So, what can we do to help not get lost in the well of grief but rather find our strengths and deepen in our hearts for anniversaries after pet loss?
Finding ways to cultivate the love we shared with our animals through tributes, memorials and self-expression helps us live more strongly, openly, deeply, fully. We can use the love we shared with our animals to help our hearts continue to grow and live strong.
I’ve had quite a few cats, dogs and horses as an adult over the last 30 years. While I have experienced deep richness from their sweet selves and the sharing of our lives together, it has also meant many deaths along the way. Adding creativity into the grieving process has helped tremendously.
My queen cat Scarlet was around 19 years when she gently passed just over a year ago. One of the many things she showed me was how peaceful and gentle this passage of leaving the physical body and going into spirit can be. This left me with sadness that she was no longer in her physical form, but also a rich peace about her death.
Liza
The day after Scarlet passed last year, my 13 yr. old beloved pooch Liza, took a dive downhill. Nine days later she also passed. Yeesh, what a spring season it was! My focus went from Scarlet’s passing to Miss Lizaloo’s care.
I had thought about planting some flowers around Scarlet’s grave, but never got to it between Liza’s care, death and then my back injury. All followed by an incredibly hot and dry summer. Trying to dig up dry, baked Virginia clay with a back injury doesn’t work so well. The flower garden would just have to wait! Instead of the physical garden, I made video tributes to honor the garden of their lives….
Coming up on the 1st anniversary of their deaths this spring I planted seeds and flowers as a living memorial to my sweet ones.
Heart Gardening
I picked out seeds especially for Scarlet and Liza as I recalled different times with them throughout our lives together. I’ve proclaimed this as my new spring ritual to help me navigate more gracefully through the anniversary of their deaths in the springtime, my favorite time of year.
So now, instead of looking back in time and feeling and focusing only on the loss, I have flowers to brighten the pathways around the house to resonate in my heart. The colors, scents and growth of so many flowers bring soft, sweet joy through my heart as I remember Liza and Scarlet every time I walk through this area. The flowers soften my heart, lift my spirits and keep transforming remnants of sadness that inevitably arise.
As I write this, I can still feel Scarlet resting her luxuriously long, jet black, delicate paw on my hand. She was not a snuggler. But she’d reach out her paw to touch me on the rare occasions she’d bless me with her presence in bed – it was so tender, sweet and comforting. And I feel Liza in my heart while seeing her in my mind’s eye clowning around and prompting me to laugh out loud. I am glad to feel her continuing to oversee my life from this new form. She sure does have a new vantage point!
I believe our sadness is a reflection of the depth of the love we have in our hearts for our loved ones. And, whatever tools we can use to keep transforming the sadness, letting the energy of the emotions move through our hearts instead of sticking, lodging, and swamping our hearts is a positive, life affirming step towards honoring the love we have for our beloveds who have passed on. They do not like us staying bogged down in our grief and sadness. I believe they always want us to feel joy and pleasure in our hearts and to remember them with openness and warmth.
My prayer is that this writing will serve as a source of inspiration for you, just as it has for myself. May this create a spark in you to continue cultivating the garden of your own heart and letting your love flow through to soothe and comfort any losses you may have had. Live Strong in Your Heart.

Mentoring People and Animals for Healthier More Vibrant and Inspired Lives!
she had really bad mange over 50% of her body. Her skin looked scalded and burned. Her treatment was being bathed and scraped every other day for weeks. When she came to Tonya at 12 weeks old her Mange was healing but she was high strung.
By the time Lizzie was 4 years old, Tonya was increasingly frustrated because her sweet dog was becoming more and more reactive. Tonya wanted to learn tools to help their partnership and increase Lizzie’s confidence. She hoped Tellington TTouch® would help her dog become more tolerant of adults, children, walking through a crowd, going for walks, doing agility in public along with other fun and normal things. Basically, she wanted Lizzie to feel comfortable and secure in her own fur.
A Nervous Lizzie
Lizzie was initially described as very reactive, aloof, shy and fearful, difficult to trim her toenails and she didn’t like being touched or brushed. She’d get frantic meeting people and wanted to run and hide when she heard strange noises and thunderstorms. In public while doing agility Tonya said Lizzie’s eyes would become glassy and noticed she was unable to think or focus on tasks. Lizzie was so anxious when in public that she wouldn’t eat treats. However, Tonya said that Lizzie was wonderful doing agility at home where she was comfortable and was a very sweet dog.
Lizzie barked so hard she’d go into a frenetic state even with people and dogs she knew and she’d pull hard on the leash when going for walks. This definitely made navigating life difficult!
Even looking at Lizzie directly set her barking off. And as soon as someone spoke, Lizzie’s barking shifted in a split second to highly frantic and then would lung. That could feel like you were being held hostage! You get the picture of the challenges they faced right?
Tonya first learned the TTouches while being lead through them, step by step, because Lizzie was far too fearful to have a stranger work with her directly. Watching demonstrations of TTouches on a stuffed dog while being guided step by step can be a really effective way to learn!
Preparation for TTouch Mouthwork
First, she stroked along Lizzie’s muzzle. All around the mouth are points that relate to the limbic part of the brain where emotions are housed. Mouth strokes help release a variety of emotions. As Tonya was walked through using additional TTouches, Lizzie began settling.
Then she used a BodyWrap. The stretchy fabric of a 2″ wide ace bandage wrapped across the chest, shoulders, belly, over the back and along the back legs can help dogs feel safer, more secure and aware of their body. Stretchy wraps like this can help calm nervousness, hyper excitability and ease fear of strangers and loud noises. The wrap helps us feel our physical body so we feel safer and more grounded.
With the wrap giving her body important sensory information and after continuing to use long firm stroking along the length of her body, back, tail, down her legs and all the way to her paws, she continued quieting and was less frantic. Increasingly, she would pause and even sit for short periods of time. And, within 15 minutes or so she felt safe enough to lie down. Her respiration and panting slowly began to ease. Tonya was amazed, she had never seen Lizzie calm down with a stranger before.
A Calming Wrap was added across Lizzie’s forehead as another gentle tool for calming and focusing. She’d alternate using this on her forehead for a few minutes and would then slide the wrap down to lie softly across her muzzle. This brings an awareness of mouth movements. Although used briefly, both the forehead and mouth wraps were key tools in helping her to calm and settle.
Tonya was fascinated to watch her dog begin to bark at someone moving or speaking and how Lizzie then began stopping herself without much direction from Tonya! This was very, very new behavior for Lizzie to begin having self-control.
This is where the magic of TTouch really begins to show itself as changes in non-thinking reactive behavior patterns begin.
We know from studies done in looking at the effects of TTouch on brainwave patterns that a balancing of all four brain-wave patterns occurs when using TTouch, for even very short periods of time. When we are calmer we can think rather than react. When our brain is more balanced, the ability to learn is enhanced.
These kinds of changes in brain waves, behavior and learning sets TTouch apart as a unique, positive, gentle, non-dominating and yet it’s a highly effective training method.
Tonya was able to learn a variety of TTouch techniques while seeing the immediate results even though she had never done TTouch previously. This is a wonderful and empowering aspect of the work. Anyone can learn TTouch and immediately see results. She has been trying for years to help her dog but didn’t know what else to do. One Vet had suggested Prozac, but she did not want to use drugs.
Tonya sent this email within 24 hours of learning TTouch, “The person next door to us was outside. Usually that means Lizzie barks and barks and barks and getting her to come back is a project. But yesterday was so, so, so different. Yes she did bark, but I kneeled down on the ground and said, “Lizzie, Here.” —and yes she did return. She didn’t want me to catch her right away—but she returned. This is huge. Normally she wouldn’t even hear me call her name. And when I did touch her—- I did the ‘gum rub’ and boy………. she seemed to forget the person was there. I was thrilled!!!!!!”
Lizzie and Tonya continued learning additional TTouch and essential oil techniques for finding balance, focus and connection. Just months after she began with TTouch, Lizzie passed her Canine Good Citizen Test! Lizzie has become a well-socialized, calm and responsive dog who no longer gets frenetic with new people, noises or situations.

Check it out! Mary Slade Doane of Bark Out Loud Weekly interviewed me this week – We started with a philosophical conversation about Universal Energy, Heart & Soul connections through our consciousness and energy systems.
And then Mary asked me, “Is there something that connects us with a particular being?”
“Who is our Heart Dog and what makes it so?”
“Do animals choose us?”
Wow, and I thought we were just talking about TTouch! It was great fun to stretch our conversation into our soul connections.
We continued the conversation to talk about TTouch with ways to improve confidence, self-control, focus, what to do for leash pulling and so much more!
Thanks Mary for a fun & wonderful interview!
